Lothians Championships

Published Date: 08 June 2005 The Scotsman
CRAIGIELAW’S 14 year old Greg Duncan the youngest player in the field leads the qualifying with a low round of 70.
Stuart George enhanced his growing reputation by claiming a huge scalp in last night’s first round of the Lothians Junior Championship at the Braids. Making it a double dose of disappointment for the Neilson family, younger brother Jamie also made an early exit as he lost by one hole to Prestonfield’s Bruce Mackay.
Mackay now faces Tantallon’s Joe Lockie, who was a 2 and 1 winner over Sean McAllister, of Craigielaw.
In the closest match of the night, Sean McGarvey, a rising star at Glencorse, produced a sparkling finish to squeeze past Musselburgh’s Ross Noon.
One down with one to play, McGarvey birdied the last – no mean feat at the Braids – and then repeated the feat at the first extra hole to go through. He now faces North Berwick’s Peter Keeling, who beat Stuart Tully of Duddingston by 2 and 1 in another close encounter.
Baberton’s Paul Ferrier was the biggest winner of the night, beating Callum Grant, of Linlithgow, 6 and 5, while Haddington’s David Warner, the leading qualifier, had a comfortable enough 3 and 2 win over Michael Williams (Craigielaw).
Ferrier and Warner now play each other, while the last of the quarter-finals tonight will be between George and yet another Craigielaw challenger Greg Duncan, who won by two holes against James Ross (Royal Burgess).

13 year old Lorettonian Greg Duncan carded a level par 71 on Gullane’s Number 1 course to qualify for the Gullane Junior Club Championship. Not only did he qualify for the club championship, Duncan who attends Loretto School also carded the low scratch score of the day. Duncan’s 71 was lower than the mens medal scratch of 72.

The match play event starts on Monday evening with the finals being played over 36 holes on Sunday.

Update: Greg Duncan of Loretto School goes on to win Gullane’s Junior Championship.
